This kid! I want nothing but the best for this one. She has so much potential! @westsideatlantacharterschool
As part of my Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES), or teacher evaluation process, it is necessary for us to write professional learning goals annually. As a school, we have identified key bucket list items on which we need to focus. Having had the opportunity to be a teacher in residence last year, I had the time and ability to get to understand the dynamics of our school and the "Westside Way." I was also tasked with helping to create a rigorous and unique middle grades program inline with innovative approaches to student learning. That, along with the flexibility of being a charter school, I've delved into lots of research topics related to successful implementation of middle grade programming while aligning those ideals with the mission of our school: "Imagination, Rigor, and Service form our core as Westside empowers a diverse community by growing learners and developing leaders." Therefore, I've chosen to focus on the following topics to enhance my professional development this year:
I will continue to develop and share out ideas and strategies for building our character education program (Advisory). There are several facets to this initiative: 1) Habitudes, 2) Mindfulness & Wellbeing, and 3) Career Education & Digital Citizenship. I will build a robust resource center of information that can be shared between teachers, students, parents, and community members .
ACTION: I'm creating a curriculum encompassing these 3 components. Advisory Link
Innovative Approaches in Mathematics Education
While I have invested heavily in a project-based learning (PBL), Constructivist approach using the Standards for Mathematical Practice to build mathematical proficiency and fluency within the structure of an opening, work session, and closing learning framework, I want to create a more innovative, student-driven learning environment that creates flexible opportunities for learning using more authentic, innovative strategies that will engage students in the content.
ACTION: I'm taking a PD course to get certified in Google for Education.
ACTION: I'm reading, "Most Likely to Succeed," (now a documentary) and "Teacherpreneurs."
Digital Learning & Citizenship
With our school providing a one-to-one Chromebook technology component to the middle grades program, I want to develop my ability to use this integration to build responsible digital citizens, create opportunities for collaboration and timely feedback, and help students create a platform for communicating and sharing their work digitally.
ACTION: I'm completing a PD certification course for Digital Citizenship: TOOL
Celebrated on March 14 around the world, Pi day celebrates this irrational (and transcendental) constant as the ratio between the circumference of the circle and its diameter. Here are some resources and websites I've collected.
As a fantastic approach to helping students develop a sense of responsibility for their actions, Give 'em Five is a conversational strategy for teachers to ultilize when addressing behavioral expectations that are not being met. This creates a culture of responsibility-centered discipline in which students take ownership for their challenging behavior rather than projecting it on others which can often be the case. The 5 steps in the conversation are:
